CHAPTER 5

July 22nd

DAWN ON THE HORIZON. The city had an uneasy calmness. Tension lurked over it. A perception rose with the sun. Through the haze of Denver's dark cloud the sun appeared in shades of angry red. Shadows retrieved into the haziness. The message was clear. It was though Satan himself had risen to observe the arena where his knifing angel was about to be challenged. Neon signs with multi-coloured street and city lights glistened across the land like a pirate's treasure chest of emeralds, diamonds and rubies—a chest of fortune, wealth and happiness.

For those who were aware of the demon stalking the grounds of this treasured city it represented turmoil and death. On this new day the arena was tense. The stage was set for the finale. The Butcher's role in life was about to climax. His performance as The Butcher had been loyal. He'd stayed true to character.

On this eerie, tense Wednesday morning in the still sleeping metropolis one light remained aglow. Nothing made sense anymore.

Lobato and her colleagues had been brought together in a meeting. All officers who had discovered bodies or who had been present at any findings were present. This included Copeland, Burns, Kents, Ernest and people from assorted departments. The meeting focused primarily on her. She didn't need to see Burns’ face so early in the morning especially on this particular day.

A disposition like his was in more ways than one much too dangerous to the public. His authority behind the badge had gone to his head like so many others, unfortunately, usually to the worst side of their minds. Until he was able to control or change this disposition he was to remain restricted from the public. It was a choice of either that or leaving the force altogether. He knew Lobato would be more than pleased to see him take that action. That satisfaction he was not about to let her have. He sat at the opposite side of the meeting table glaring at her making it obvious to all.

She had far too much on her mind of greater importance than him. She ignored him.

Copeland did his thing.

The purpose of the meeting was for Copeland to speak his mind. In his opinion Lobato was proving herself incapable. The reality she had thrown at him the night before bugged the hell out of him. She had hit a sore spot.

At her side Ernest observed it all. She'd told him of Burns and her suspicions of him. He watched every move made listening to every word said. To him Burns was one bastard who never should have been put behind a badge. When they made him they should have tossed away the mould but hadn't, a jerk of a different kind. Where he came from white was white, black was black, and brown was brown. Each had their side of the tracks.

As the meeting progressed Copeland went over each case. Lobato and Ernest took notes of anything they may have missed before. There wasn't much.
